What a lovely day! This is the kind of day to tackle another challenge from 30 Days of Inspiration. Pondering the question at length, I’ve come up with the 5 songs that I’d want to have with me on a deserted island.
This is a tough one for me, because I am a Song person. You understand what Song people are, don’t you? I have noticed that there are two types of people when it comes to the appreciation of popular music—Song people and Band (or Artist) people. I am a Song person, who is in relationship with a Band person; so this issue comes up constantly. My significant other is a Beatle fanatic, and his 5 songs would be by the Beatles, no question. I, on the other hand, just love songs.
He and I are able to resolve our differences because Lennon and McCartney wrote such great songs. How could I not appreciate that? I am slowly teaching him that there are other artists out there he might learn to tolerate, if not actually like. To his credit, he will sometimes listen to my songs. There are some great bands and artists that I admire, yes…but mostly because they have great songs. From Elvis Presley to Elton John to Maroon 5, my tastes are eclectic. It doesn’t matter if it is Pop, Rock, Country, or Easy Listening, it’s all about the song. I love songs by groups that end up as One-Hit Wonders; because obviously they had one good song!
My guy refuses to pick just 5 Beatles songs (I asked); but I came up with a list on my own criteria. I was able to wade through all of the songs that I love by using one guideline. I have lived in 5 complete decades (sigh), so I decided to pick one song from each decade that sort of represented that decade to me. Having these 5 songs with me on a deserted island would be like taking a walk through my life. That’s not such a bad thing, now, is it?
I eliminated Country music from the mix, because adding that variable would have made the list impossible to compile. So, without further fanfare, here is my list:
- 1960′s} Wedding Bell Blues by Laura Nero

- 1970′s} Make Me Smile by Chicago
- 1980′s} The Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
- 1990′s} Only Wanna Be With You by Hootie and the Blowfish
- 2000′s} Drops of Jupiter by Train
That’s some list, isn’t it? In my sixth decade (now, that’s depressing), I would have to say my favorite is Good Life by OneRepublic, but I reserve the right to change that one!
What songs would you select? Take a walk down memory lane, and see what you think. Are you a Band person or a Song person? I would love to know.
Enjoy,
C-Lea
